Flexible and sustainable: pouches are the packaging solution for the future
When you think about sustainable packaging solutions for your product – pouches should come to your mind. Pouches excel through their great flexibility and safety. They require very little material and are unbreakable. Thanks to their outstanding protective properties, pouch packaging retains product quality on a high level and ensures a long shelf life. Pouches combine product safety, consumer-friendliness, and sustainability.
There are many types of packaging, but pouches are different. Five facts about the packaging solution for the future:
1. Pouch packaging is lightweight
Pouches weigh up to 80 percent less than other types of packaging, for example, only one-fifth of a comparable PET bottle. Pouches use less material than other packaging types, this makes them the ideal lightweight solution.
2. Less CO2 emissions
Pouches require less material per packaged product. In stand-up pouches, more than 90 percent of the product volume is made up by the content. Thus more product is transported rather than packaging material. In this way, pouch packaging reduces CO2 emissions. An example: glass bottles, including the transport of empties, account on average for 50 to 60 percent of the truckload volume; the figure for stand-up pouch packaging is only 6.1 percent.
3. Optimum product safety
Pouches are very resilient. This helps reducing product losses during transportation and storage, compared to glass packaging which can easily break or cans which can burst during the process. Thanks to the outstanding barrier properties, pouch packaging guarantees a long product shelf life as well.
4. Reduction of food and packaging waste
A longer shelf life also means a reduction of food waste. In addition to this you can almost com-pletely empty the pouch unlike many other packaging types. The result is a further reduction of food waste. Due to the low use of materials, the amount of packaging waste, generated by pouches, is also minimal. When disposed, pouches yield less waste than other types of packaging.
5. Consumer friendliness
Pouches are flexible and therefore very pleasant and easy to handle. They are unbreakable and offer a high level of product protection – products packed in pouches are therefore very convenient to use on-the-go and out-of-home. Pouches can also be easily and completely emptied which makes them perfect for reducing food waste.
